Reflecting upon Morton’s “Ecology” and/or Tronto’s “Caring Architecture,” choose few key ideas from the text(s) and see how they might inform architectural design practice today and into the future. Please remember, this is not an opinion-response piece of writing; it’s a formal essay, so please take care to cite your quotations carefully and provide some reasonable evidence for any claims, speculations, inquiries, etc.
Your own ideas should be in conversation with those that you cite, certainly, but your aim with essay writing is to inform and persuade.
In order to explore ideas about ecology and “caring” within this context, you’ll need to have at least one case study of architectural design. (More than one might be helpful, if you want to show variations on an approach, or contrast with things quite different.) Hopefully the slideshow presentation assignment can help you locate, or start to locate, an excellent example. You can keep with the one you found for the presentation, or choose another one that you feel would be better suited to Essay #3, your choice. You’re should locate books, articles, and other materials about the example you employ in order to enrich your writing.
Please note that while the architectural case study is required for this essay, the essay is not wholly about that project. It should principally be about particular notions of ecology and “caring architecture,” their exemplification, and implementation. In other words, don’t just describe the architecture; use that description of the architecture to explore ideas discussed or nodded toward in the texts.
Since we’ve had an abbreviated last-minute consideration of Ecology/Sustainability/Caring, you may want to read the supplemental text attached below:
