COMM1003 Final Essay Assignment

Final Argumentative Essay COMM 1003 – 15% Due date: Week 13

The final essay will be a five-paragraph style argumentative essay of approximately 3-4 pages (approximately 750-900 words). The page count includes your essay and reference page, but NOT your title page. (Your title page is expected, but it will not count towards your word or page count).

*You must choose ONE of the suggested topics below:

Culinary/Tourism/General Interest:

· How can the restaurant industry help stop food waste?

· Restaurant culture can often be a stressful environment where mental/physical health is not valued. How can the restaurant industry promote better mental/physical health?

· Instants of sexism occur in most kitchens, whether that includes physical harassment, “jokes” or keeping women in a “pink ghetto”. How can the restaurant industry help end sexism in the industry?

· Should Slum Tourism be banned, or are there benefits?

· How has technology changed the way events are planned?

· Are unpaid internships beneficial for students (even though they are not paid for their work/time)?

Your professor will supply you with one article to consider, but you must also find ONE article from the George Brown library database to use in your essay (You may use up to 3 articles, but all must be from the library).

Please note that you must include at least ONE direct “quote” in your final essay with a citation. You should also paraphrase correctly within the essay (and cite). I would not recommend using more than 5 quotes for a 5-paragraph essay, but you are welcome to use more than one source as research.

Format: Your essay must be typed in Microsoft Word and be formatted in Times New Roman, size 12 font and be double spaced (see the essay template).

Submission: You must upload a Microsoft Word file of your essay on BlackBoard in the Dropbox by the deadline.

You will lose significant marks if you are missing ANY of the following:

1. An APA formatted Title Page (See template)

2. Introductory Paragraph: Hook + introduction to topic ideas (middle section) + Thesis (Topic + Claim + Proof 1, 2 & 3)

3. 1st Body Paragraph: Topic sentence, 2 supporting points with evidence and explanation, link to thesis

4. 2nd Body Paragraph: Topic sentence, 2 supporting points with evidence and explanation, link to thesis

5. 3rd Body Paragraph: Topic sentence, 2 supporting points with evidence and explanation, link to thesis

6. Concluding Paragraph: Rephrase of thesis and review of key points (no new information), suggestion of consequences or future action, recommendations OR call to action.

7. References Page: List at least 2 references in APA style

A strong essay:

a) Makes a clear argument (does not simply summarize information)

b) Introduces, cites, and explains/interprets all evidence from outside sources

c) Is aware of its audience, presenting information in an organized, easy-to-follow manner

d) Offers an original approach or perspective on its topic

Please ensure that you consult an APA style guide to ensure that in-text citations and references are properly formatted. The library has many APA resources. ** Be very careful in providing citations whenever you include the words and/or ideas of others. Failure to do so could result in charges of plagiarism with the potential of serious academic consequences. ** Note: If a tutor/friend/family member significantly changes your essay, you will receive a 0 (this includes the use of google translate). In addition, you may not submit an essay that you have already submitted to another class.
