How to read a play:
1. Give attention to the list of characters (list them on a book mark if necessary).
2. Note the setting and props.
3. Observe the mood or tone.
4. Be aware of character movements and gestures (stage direction).
5. Pay attention to costumes (character’s manner of dress).
6. Take note of sound effects.
7. As in all literature, read (listen to) the dialogue carefully.
8. Take note of symbols and metaphors.
9. Mind the theatre (150-200 seats or larger, indoor/outdoor).
Essay Assignment:
o By now, you should know what is expected in a literature based essay. A play based essay is similar to one based on a short story or poem. Using what we have studied, write an essay concerning one of the following plays (no less than half a page)
(20 points):
The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chehkhov (textbook).
The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde (http://en.wikisource.on/wiki/The Importance of Being Earnest).
o Reference quotes by using the page number at the end of the sentence. This is the same method required for prose (short story) essays, o Review the Writing Guide.
