Why I
: Visual Essay Presentation Assignment Sheet
In his essay “Why I Write”, George Orwell outlines the reasons and motivations compelling writers to write, and explains how those reasons impact his own reasons and motivations for writing.
For this assignment, you will create a visual essay in which you identify something in your life that you pursue with the same passion with which Orwell pursues writing.
Content:
As Orwell’s does, your visual essay presentation must include:
1. Personal Beginnings: Begin with a short personal narrative/account that helps the audience understand when you became drawn to your passion, and for what reason. You might include how family dynamics shaped this passion, or how the time you live in shaped this passion. Either way, you should convey a sense of who you are and why you have pursued the passion about which you arc presenting.
2. Reasons for pursuing passion: As Orwell does, provide an outline of four reasons why someone might pursue the passion which you are writing about. The four reasons should be diverse and should include little, if any, overlap.
3. Why you pursue your passion: Orwell discusses how the four reasons writers write applies to him. In your presentation, discuss how the four reasons you described in step two apply to you, and then discuss which reason is most applicable to you.
4. Conclusion: End your presentation with a concluding thought that helps tie your presentation together. Your conclusion does not need to be long, but should give the reader a sense of closure. You might summarize a few key points, or return to the beginning of your presentation by relating your passion back to your personal beginnings with the activity/pursuit.
