Below are five issues that relate to Susan Glaspell’s play, Trifles. Choose ONE OF THE PROMPTS BELOW and write three to five pages defending your position. Make certain you are clear in your first paragraph about which of the five themes you’ve chosen. Your paper will be an MLA STYLE DOCUMENTED ESSAY, quoting and paraphrasing from outside sources and from the play. You will be quoting lines from the play, so this will be a source on your WORKS CITED PAGE. You will CHOOSE TWO OR THREE OUTSIDE SOURCES in addition to the play that address the issue of the theme you choose. These can be web or non-web sources that may comment on the play itself, or farm life for women, or women’s issues in jury trials or any other source material that will help your argument. NOTE: This paper is not a book report. You must state one of the themes above and prove in the paper that this theme exists, along with providing support on that theme from outside sources. You will have to describe elements of plot and character here, but ALWAYS do so with the theme you have chosen in mind. This paper may not be re-written for a higher grade. HERE ARE THE PROMPTS:
1. Explain why Glaspell’s choice for Trifles is such an appropriate title. Be specific and detailed.
2 . Glaspell uses the literary device called “Dramatic Irony.” Explain in detail how this concept provides an extra dimension to the mystery and show examples of what we as the audience know that some characters do not.
3 . In the play, the men don’t change but the women do. Describe their transformation as they discover clues, and the possible consequences for them.
4. Glaspell wrote this piece with the concept in mind that women couldn’t sit on juries at the time of the play. How do you think Minnie will fare in her murder trial and why. Discuss the evidence and the involvement of the two women in the play.
5. Symbols abound in this play. Find and explain at least five of them in detail.
CRITICAL: You must use quotes and paraphrases correctly, and your Works Cited Page must be right.
