Once you have generated and organized the ideas for your story, you will begin to develop a setting, plot, and time frame that you will build upon as you continue to write your story. In this Assignment, you will turn your outline and opening scene into a first draft of your short story that applies the development techniques of setting, plot, and time.<br \/>\nQuestions about this assignment? That way, everyone in the class will see, and benefit from, the Instructor\u2019s response.<br \/>\nTo prepare for this Assignment:<\/p>\n<p>Review the Final Project Introduction and Overview document in the Learning Resources.<br \/>\nReview Chapter 5, \u201cSetting,\u201d in Shaping the Story. Complete \u201cProgressive Writing Exercise #5: Writing Where Things Happen\u201d on pages 82-83.<\/p>\n<p>List possible settings in which your short story could occur.<br \/>\nSelect a setting from your list.<\/p>\n<p>Review Chapter 9, \u201cPlot,\u201d in Shaping the Story. Complete \u201cProgressive Writing Exercise #9: Linking Scene to Scene\u201d on pages 142-143.<br \/>\nReview Chapter 10, \u201cTime,\u201d in Shaping the Story. Complete \u201cProgressive Writing Exercise #10: Pacing, and Uses of Time\u201d on page 159.<br \/>\nConsider how you will combine these techniques of development with the outline and opening scene created in Week 1 to create a unified text.<\/p>\n<p>How will your outline contribute to filling in the details of plot, setting, and time?<br \/>\nWhat details will you include for the setting of your short story? What details will you exclude?<br \/>\nHow will these techniques of development be used to affect the reactions of the audience?<\/p>\n<p>The assignment:<br \/>\nWrite a 2- to 3-page first draft of your short story, demonstrating the development techniques of plot, setting, and time.<br \/>\nFormatting Expectations:<\/p>\n<p>Indent the first sentence of each paragraph. Block paragraphs are not acceptable for this assignment.<br \/>\nYour final document should:<\/p>\n<p>Be in a 10- or 12-point font, such as Times New Roman or Verdana.<br \/>\nBe double-spaced throughout.<br \/>\nHave 1-inch margins for top, bottom, left, and right.<\/p>\n<p>By Day 7<br \/>\nSubmit your Assignment.
