Cold temperatures and predominant<\/p>\n<p>winds from the northwest have created a dip in the jet stream in January. The wind is bringing cold and<\/p>\n<p>moisture from Canada into the central United States. Snow has blanketed several states, including those<\/p>\n<p>states that rarely receive snowfall \u0096 let alone in numbers that are measurable. The bulk of the snow fell<\/p>\n<p>over the third week in January. Here are some of the totals from this storm as compared to the average<\/p>\n<p>annual totals:<\/p>\n<p>State Storm Totals Average Annual*<\/p>\n<p>Montana 30 38<\/p>\n<p>Wyoming 32 91<\/p>\n<p>Colorado 38 19<\/p>\n<p>North Dakota 54 51<\/p>\n<p>South Dakota 54 44<\/p>\n<p>Nebraska 47 26<\/p>\n<p>Kansas 44 15<\/p>\n<p>Oklahoma 32 8<\/p>\n<p>Texas 20 1.5<\/p>\n<p>*Average yearly snowfall by American state. National Climate Data Center information obtained from https:\/\/www.currentresults.com\/Weather\/US\/average-snowfall-by-state.php<\/p>\n<p>It is now the last week in January, and it is still snowing with another ten inches expected in higher<\/p>\n<p>elevations with four to six inches expected for most areas in the path of the storm. However, most of the<\/p>\n<p>United States has already been largely affected by this storm. Furthermore, some of the southeastern states<\/p>\n<p>outside of the snow area are receiving precipitation in the form of ice and heavy rain, making roadways<\/p>\n<p>slippery and unpassable. People across the nation have coined this week-long event \u0093Snowmageddon.\u0094<\/p>\n<p>Many of the northern states such as Wyoming and the Dakotas are used to handling snow and are<\/p>\n<p>managing, although the storm totals are quite large for what they typically receive each year (see chart<\/p>\n<p>above). It is the central and southern states that are struggling as they are not equipped to handle such a<\/p>\n<p>storm event. Those areas are Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas.<\/p>\n<p>To date, there have been ten confirmed deaths \u0096 all in the central\/southern locales. Two in<\/p>\n<p>Nebraska, four in Kansas, one in Oklahoma, and three in Texas. All state roads across the affected states<\/p>\n<p>have been closed; however, the highway patrol suspects hundreds, if not thousands, are either stranded<\/p>\n<p>from the storm or trapped under the snowfall. Millions are without electricity and heavy snow has caused<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.currentresults.com\/Weather\/US\/average-snowfall-by-state.php<br \/>\nmany roofs to collapse, trapping people in their homes or businesses. There are reports of whole towns<\/p>\n<p>being completely under snowfall (although this is not yet confirmed). It is unclear the amount of damage<\/p>\n<p>caused; however, it is estimated to be in the billions. Volunteers are calling in from outside the affected<\/p>\n<p>area to help; however, they are unable to enter the affected states to help. Resources from affected states<\/p>\n<p>are overwhelmed. The U.S. President has declared nearly all of the United States as major disaster areas,<\/p>\n<p>allowing federal aid to support local and state efforts.<\/p>\n<p>While the snow is slowing, it is still coming down. Therefore, there are concerns that when the<\/p>\n<p>snow starts to melt in the spring, there will be extreme flooding causing yet another disaster in these<\/p>\n<p>sections of the country.<\/p>\n<p>Your Review: What do you tell your public? Complete the following steps using the scenario attached:<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Develop a video, using the instructions below, delivering a public announcement that informs the population of what will be done to resolve the issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Your video should be at minimum 4 minutes in length.<br \/>\n\u00b7 Address these elements in your video:<br \/>\n\u00b7<br \/>\no Describe the nature of the situation.<br \/>\no Explain what FEMA and others are doing to mitigate the situation.<br \/>\no Explain what people need to do to stay safe or to get help in order to reduce panic.<br \/>\n\u00b7 Use an appropriate vocal tone to reduce panic and provide a solid explanation of the above elements. Preparing and delivering a clear message.<\/p>\n<p>Instructions to record video:<\/p>\n<p>Use an external platform called Screencast-O-Matic (Links to an external site.). This guide will familiarize you with the tool and review how to upload your video. Do not develop a PowerPoint presentation, you may simply use a picture of a flower reporting the above information in lieu of a PowerPoint. This discussion is meant to assess your communication abilities; therefore, the audio portion of the video or screencast is essential.<\/p>\n<p>Think about the following questions while formulating your response to the public:<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 What are the issues you will address first?<br \/>\n\u00b7 Which organization is responsible for what?
