The Registered Nurse in charge of the shift, RN Jolie, tells you to<br \/>\nrestrain Mrs Davis in her chair with a lap restraint. You are not certain that Mrs Davis<br \/>\nneeds to be restrained and you question RN Jolie\u2019s order. RN Jolie becomes<br \/>\nannoyed at your question and tries to restrain Mrs Davis herself.<br \/>\nMrs Davis verbally objects to being restrained and attempts to undo the restraint. In<br \/>\nthe process her chair tips over, she hits her head on the floor and loses<br \/>\nconsciousness. While RN Jolie attends to Mrs Davis you call the ambulance.<br \/>\nAfter Mrs Davis is taken to hospital RN Jolie tells you to say that Mrs Davis was<br \/>\nfound after she had falle n and hit her head if anyone asks you about what happened<br \/>\nto her. RN Jolie also tells you not to say anything about restraining Mrs Davis as you<br \/>\nwill both get into trouble. You feel uncomfortable about this but she is your<br \/>\nRegistered Nurse so you say nothi ng.<br \/>\nMrs Davis dies in hospital two days later. The Coroner has been notified by the<br \/>\nhospital and her death is to be investigated by the Coroner\u2019s Court.<br \/>\nWhen you hear about what is to happen following Mrs Davis\u2019 death you are unsure<br \/>\nand become worried about what you should do now.<br \/>\n1. Discuss the following ethical and professional issues in relation to this Case<br \/>\nStudy:<br \/>\n\u2022 How would you respond to RN Jolie when she tells you to lie about<br \/>\nwhat happened to Mrs Davis<br \/>\n\u2022 What are your responsibilities in this situation and what should you do<br \/>\nto stay within the boundaries of professional nursing practice<br \/>\nI n this section, you need to choose an ethical decision -making model and<br \/>\ndiscuss how you would use it to help you to make a decision about how to<br \/>\nrespond to the RNs request to lie, and to outline what your professional<br \/>\nresponsibilities would be in this situ ation.<br \/>\nThere are a number of different decision -making models (see Topic 7 of your<br \/>\nonline resource \u201cModels for Decision Making\u201d), but the DECIDE model is<br \/>\nrecommended for novice nurses (and therefore student nurses), according to<br \/>\nAllen, Chapman, Francis and O\u2019Connor (2008). However, all decision-making<br \/>\nmodels serve the same purpose: to provide a process through which a person<br \/>\ncan examine, and reflect on, all the aspects of an ethical dilemma, so that<br \/>\nthey can make a decision.<\/p>\n<p>Your assessment should be wri tten in an essay format with the above legal and<br \/>\nethical issues discussed under headings or as a free-flowing essay. These issues<br \/>\ndon\u2019t need to be discussed in the order listed and can be done in a way that is<br \/>\nrelevant to the Case Study. For example you ma y begin your essay discussing the<br \/>\nrequirements for a valid consent and how Mrs Davis meets these before moving on<br \/>\nto say how this would then influence the practice of restraint before going on to the<br \/>\nother issues in the Case Study.<br \/>\nThis essay should be at least 1, 000 words and up to a maximum of 1,500 words.<br \/>\nYou need to support your work with references from appropriate sources including<br \/>\nyour text books, journal articles and appropriate websites.
