Companies are being<\/p>\n<p>driven to develop unique applications of undeniably cool<\/p>\n<p>technologies by the drive to create a sustainable competitive<\/p>\n<p>advantage. \u201cAt the end of the day, as cool as this thing we\u2019ve<\/p>\n<p>developed is, it\u2019s a tool,\u201d says Stephanie Wernet, Goodyear\u2019s<\/p>\n<p>CIO. \u201cIt is meant to serve a business end. In our case, this<\/p>\n<p>tool lets us put out new, more innovative products faster<\/p>\n<p>than the competition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Working with Sandia National Labs, Goodyear\u2019s IT<\/p>\n<p>department developed software to design and test tires virtually.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, the company built physical prototypes and<\/p>\n<p>tested them by driving thousands of miles on tracks. Using a<\/p>\n<p>mathematical model, the software simulates tire behavior in<\/p>\n<p>different driving conditions so that the designer can see how<\/p>\n<p>the tire gets pushed, pulled, and stretched as it rolls down a<\/p>\n<p>road, hits bumps, turns corners, screeches to a halt, and grips<\/p>\n<p>the road in wet, dry, and icy conditions. Goodyear wanted to<\/p>\n<p>shorten that time to get its products to market more quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Three research and development employees advanced<\/p>\n<p>the idea of testing prototypes using computer simulations,<\/p>\n<p>which could do the job faster.<\/p>\n<p>The company had never done simulations but figured<\/p>\n<p>initial investments and subsequent maintenance costs were<\/p>\n<p>worth the payoff. Goodyear\u2019s cost of goods sold, as well as its<\/p>\n<p>sales, decreased by 2.6 percent from 2003 to 2004, the year<\/p>\n<p>its first fully simulated tires hit the market. Meanwhile, the<\/p>\n<p>research and development (R&amp;D) budget for tire testing and<\/p>\n<p>design decreased by 25 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Custom-built software runs on hundreds of processors on<\/p>\n<p>hundreds of Linux computers in a massively parallel computing<\/p>\n<p>environment. Goodyear invested more than $6 million to<\/p>\n<p>build this high-powered computing environment. It plans to<\/p>\n<p>expand and upgrade its Linux clusters to meet business demands<\/p>\n<p>for new tires and to improve the fidelity of its virtual<\/p>\n<p>tests. The company believes it is the first tire maker to use<\/p>\n<p>computers to design and test its wheels. Although the auto<\/p>\n<p>industry has done computer-assisted design work since the<\/p>\n<p>1980s, the technology had not been applied to tires because<\/p>\n<p>their malleable materials made simulation difficult.<\/p>\n<p>Designers can perform 10 times more tests, reducing a<\/p>\n<p>new tire\u2019s time to market from two years to as little as nine<\/p>\n<p>months. Goodyear attributes its sales growth from $15 billion<\/p>\n<p>in 2003 to $20 billion in 2005 to new products introduced as<\/p>\n<p>a result of this change.<\/p>\n<p>Public utility JEA uses neural network technology to<\/p>\n<p>create an artificial intelligence system it has recently implemented.<\/p>\n<p>The system automatically determines the optimal<\/p>\n<p>combinations of oil and natural gas the utility\u2019s boilers need<\/p>\n<p>to produce electricity cost-effectively, given fuel prices and<\/p>\n<p>the amount of electricity required.
