It was night. We were out on patrol. I remember it was so hot<\/p>\n<p>packed in our vehicle. Suddenly there was an explosion. We got tossed into a<\/p>\n<p>ditch. And somehow I made it out, and I could see it was the Humvee behind us.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s whole front end was gone. It had hit a roadside bomb. Our vehicle had just<\/p>\n<p>driven past it, just mistriggering it. But not them. They didn\u2019t make it.<\/p>\n<p>FEMALE SPEAKER: Remember how we practiced. Slow your breathing down.<\/p>\n<p>Inhale and exhale from your abdomen.<\/p>\n<p>LEVY: Thank you.<\/p>\n<p>FEMALE SPEAKER: And just take your time. Whenever you are ready.<\/p>\n<p>LEVY: So the bomb went off. I managed to get out. I had my night vision goggles<\/p>\n<p>And I could see the Humvee, the one that got hit. It\u2019s whole front end was<br \/>\ngone. And there\u2019s this crater in the road. And inside it I could see\u2013 I could see<\/p>\n<p>Kurt\u2019s\u2013 our platoon Sergeant, he was lying there everything below his waist was<\/p>\n<p>gone, blown off. And he was screaming. Screaming like nothing you\u2019d ever<\/p>\n<p>heard.<\/p>\n<p>And then he was looking at me. And he was screaming for me to kill him. To stop<\/p>\n<p>his suffering. He was yelling, please. Please. And someone tried putting<\/p>\n<p>tourniquets on him. But the ground just kept getting darker with his blood. And I<\/p>\n<p>was staring into his face.<\/p>\n<p>I had my rifle trained on him. I was going to do it. You know. He was begging me<\/p>\n<p>I could feel my finger on the trigger. And I kept looking into his face. And then<br \/>\nI didn\u2019t have to do nothing. Because the screaming had stopped. He\u2019d bled out.<\/p>\n<p>Died right there.<\/p>\n<p>And all I could think was I\u2019d let him down. His last request, and I couldn\u2019t do it. I<\/p>\n<p>couldn\u2019t put a bullet in him so he could die fast not slow.<\/p>\n<p>FEMALE SPEAKER: I can see and hear how painful it is for you to relive this<\/p>\n<p>story. Do you think this incident is behind some of the<\/p>\n<p>symptoms you\u2019ve been telling me about?<\/p>\n<p>LEVY: When I go to sleep at night, I close my eyes, and I see Kurt\u2019s there staring<\/p>\n<p>at me. So I don\u2019t sleep too good. That\u2019s why I started drinking. It\u2019s the only way I<\/p>\n<p>can forget about that night. So I drink too much. At least that\u2019s what my wife yells<\/p>\n<p>at me.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re not doing too well these days. I\u2019m not exactly the life of the party. I left Iraq<\/p>\n<p>10 months ago. But Iraq never left me.
