If you are still unsure about how to \u00a0proceed with the discussion, please reply to one of those announcements \u00a0or contact your instructor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px; font-size: unset;\">Please carefully read and think about the entire prompt before \u00a0composing your first post. This discussion will require you to have \u00a0carefully read Chapter 4 of the textbook, as well as the assigned \u00a0portions of Immanuel Kant\u2019s (2008) Groundwork for the Metaphysics of \u00a0Morals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px; font-size: unset;\">Think of someone real or fictional whom some people regard as a \u00a0\u201chero\u201d for helping others, stopping something bad or evil, and so forth, \u00a0even though by doing so they violated what would normally be considered \u00a0a moral rule (focus on morality; don&#8217;t simply think of someone who \u00a0broke the law). For example, they may have lied, broken a promise, \u00a0stolen, harmed someone innocent, or even murdered, but done so with good \u00a0intentions. (Be sure to clearly explain both sides of this example \u2013 \u00a0what seems good and what seems morally questionable about the action.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px; font-size: unset;\">Try to think of any example that we would either all be familiar \u00a0with, or something we can easily look up (in other words, don\u2019t just \u00a0make something up or describe something generic). Think of characters in \u00a0movies, TV shows, or books, people in the news, historical figures, \u00a0etc. Please don\u2019t use an example that someone else has already used!<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px; font-size: unset;\">1. Engage with the text:<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px; font-size: unset;\">Once you have thought of your example, evaluate what they did \u00a0according to Kant\u2019s Categorical Imperative. First, explain the \u00a0Categorical Imperative. Is what the person did moral, or immoral, \u00a0according to the Categorical Imperative? (You may focus on either \u00a0formulation.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px; font-size: unset;\">2. Reflect on yourself:<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px; font-size: unset;\">Do you agree with this evaluation of the action?<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px; font-size: unset;\">If you think Kant would regard it as immoral and you agree, how would \u00a0you explain to the person in your own words why what they did was wrong \u00a0despite the good intentions and effects?
