After World War II, and the burning of the Baku oil fields in the \u00a0early 1900s due to protests, Russia realized by the 1950s that their \u00a0mass production of oil, and low price strategies they could be a \u00a0dominant force in the suppliers of these resources. During uproar in the \u00a0Middle East during the 70s and 80s gas prices began to rise, however, \u00a0Russia maintained gas prices at a cost of 50% less than that of its \u00a0Middle East counterpart(Goodrich, 2014). Most of central Europe began to \u00a0depend on Russia due to the accessibility, contracts with Russia that \u00a0allowed for loans on oil exports, and the need for Russia to hold off \u00a0western pressures due to sanctions.<br \/>\nAccording to Goodrich, 2014:<br \/>\nEnergy \u00a0revenues make up half of the government\u2019s budget. This capital influx \u00a0was and continues to be instrumental in helping Russia build the \u00a0military and industrial basis needed to maintain its status as a \u00a0regional \u0094 if not global \u0094 power.<br \/>\nBeyond export revenues, the energy sector has contributed to the creation of a domestically stable and industrialized state. Russia\u2019s domestic energy consumption is very high\u00a0(Links to an external site.) \u00a0due to extremely cold weather for most of the year, but despite \u00a0inefficiencies within the energy sector and the cost of producing \u00a0energy, the country\u2019s domestic reserves have enabled Moscow to provide \u00a0its citizens and the industries that employ them with low energy prices.<br \/>\nThis explains why Western Europe and Russia have an indifferent relationship. In fact in 2010 about 34.5% of\u00a0 Ukraines oil was imported from Russia(Kennedy,2014) \u00a0Russia \u00a0needs the revenue, and Europe cant get the energy resources at a \u00a0better rate. Russia\u2019s physical connectivity with Europe and ability to \u00a0undercut any competitors have served as the basis of many of Moscow\u2019s \u00a0relationships in Europe(Goodrich, 2014). Moving forward Ukraine and \u00a0other Eastern European countries are looking for other ways to bypass \u00a0Russian oil imports by getting alternate pipelines, and looking to \u00a0innovate other renewable energy sources. In the long run this long \u00a0standing relationship if terminated may be harmful not only to the \u00a0Russian economy, but also various European nations who cant afford to \u00a0get these resources in other places.<br \/>\nReferences:<br \/>\nGoodrich, L.
