You will identify the component parts of arguments and differentiate between various types of arguments such as inductive and deductive. You will then construct specific, original arguments. There are\u00a0<strong>two<\/strong>\u00a0parts to the assignment. Complete both parts. \u00a0\u00a0<strong>Part 1<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>1a: Identify Components of Arguments<\/strong>\u00a0Identify the component parts of the argument, premises and conclusion, for the following passages. Where applicable,<strong>\u00a0highlight key words or phrases that identify a claim as a premise or a conclusion. \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Refer to the following example: \u201c<em>All men are mortal. Socrates is a man. Therefore, Socrates is mortal.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li>All men are mortal.<\/li>\n<li>Premise- Socrates is a man.<\/li>\n<li>Premise-\u00a0<strong>Therefore<\/strong>, Socrates is mortal.<\/li>\n<li>Conclusion -\u201cTherefore\u201d is a key word indicating the claim is the conclusion.<\/li>\n<li><strong>1.<\/strong>\u00a0Sue is pregnant and will give birth to one child. We know already this child has no genetic anomalies. If Sue\u2019s baby is a boy, he will be named Mark. If Sue\u2019s baby is a girl, she will be named Margaret. Sue will have either a boy or a girl. So we know Sue\u2019s baby will be named Mark or Margaret.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2.<\/strong>\u00a0If the library has\u00a0<em>The<\/em>\u00a0<em>Lord of the Rings,<\/em>\u00a0you won\u2019t find it on the first floor. This is because all fantasy novels are fiction and all works of fiction are housed on the second floor of the library.
