Reference your textbook, the weekly \u00a0introductions in your course, and reputable journal articles to explore topic ideas. Be sure to choose a topic that you are highly interested in. From that topic, you will pose a question for your research.<\/p>\n<p>For example, you may find interest \u00a0in the life span of adolescence. From there, you may want to explore \u00a0issues related to adolescent suicide. From this topic you could pose a \u00a0number of questions to research, such as:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Are adolescents from single-parent homes at higher risk of suicide than those from two-parent homes?<\/li>\n<li>Does lack of play in childhood lead to anxiety and depression in adolescence?<\/li>\n<li>Does \u201chelicopter parenting\u201d lead to anxiety and depression in adolescence?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>How to Develop a Research Question<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your research question should enable \u00a0you draw some unique conclusions so that you are not simply reporting \u00a0on research that has already been concluded. You may have to do some \u00a0preliminary research within your topic to determine a suitable question. \u00a0Here are some examples.<br \/>\nThis example is too broad and will likely lead to a confusing and disorganized paper. It lacks parameters.<\/p>\n<p><em>Why do adolescents commit suicide?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This example is too narrow. It can be answered rather simply with some basic data.<\/p>\n<p><em>How many adolescent suicides occurred last year?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A good research question specifies the parameters of the research, yet leaves room for analysis and the writers unique input.<\/p>\n<p><em>What are some of the unique social factors that led to an increase in suicide rates among 13- to 18-year-old females in 2015?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(In your paper, you would define two \u00a0to three social factors you deem significant and connect them with the \u00a0appropriate physical, cognitive, and socioemotional occurrences \u00a0happening during this part of life span development. Then, draw your own \u00a0conclusions from the research you find.)<\/p>\n<p>Once you have your research \u00a0question, phrase it as a statement so that it can become your thesis \u00a0statement. The thesis statement is what drives the direction of your \u00a0paper.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Research Paper Topic Proposal Assignment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Include the following in your topic proposal:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your research question<\/li>\n<li>Your thesis statement<\/li>\n<li>A narrative describing your topic and why you chose it (its significance)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Refer to the\u00a0<strong>Writing Resources link<\/strong>\u00a0under the\u00a0<strong>Student Resources tab<\/strong>\u00a0for help with writing thesis statements and research questions,\u00a0and consult your West Coast University librarians for database search support as needed.<br \/>\nYour topic proposal should be 12 pages in length.
