You can<br \/>\nchoose from any of the topics listed below (recommended) or explore further topics<br \/>\nin the chapter on Sula, pp. X to Y in the book How to Write about Toni Morrison (linked<br \/>\nhere for your convenience).<br \/>\nYour literary analysis should be between 2 and 3 pages (600 to 750 words), not<br \/>\nincluding the Works Cited page, should be double spaced in Times New Roman 12-<br \/>\npoint font and must include:<br \/>\nA clearly articulated thesis that states, somewhere in your introduction, the<br \/>\nassertion (position, interpretation) that your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/homeworkhandlers.com\/paper\/\">paper<\/a>\u00a0will prove<br \/>\nAn introduction, a minimum of 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion<br \/>\nAt least two quotes from the novel itself that are integrated into your<br \/>\ndiscussion<br \/>\nAt least two citations of outside sources (such as literary criticism on the novel,<br \/>\npreferably from articles from the MDC databases)<br \/>\nTopic sentences that focus the discussion in the body paragraphs<br \/>\nExamples, details, explanations in the body paragraphs that clearly support<br \/>\nyour thesis<br \/>\nClear connections between ideas from paragraph to paragraph and within<br \/>\nparagraphs<br \/>\nProper MLA style format in the heading, in the in-text citations, and in the Works Cited page (see the template for the heading and margins in this lesson)<br \/>\nWorks Cited page includes articles from two sources and from the novel for a<br \/>\nminimum of three total listed sources<br \/>\nStandard usage, grammar, and mechanics<br \/>\nIMPORTANT INFORMATION:<br \/>\nYou will submit your final draft through the Turn-it-in drop box designated for<br \/>\nthis purpose in the course. Analyze the ending of the novel. What are the circles of sorrow that Nel<br \/>\nexperiences? Is the ending pessimistic, optimistic, or something else altogether?<br \/>\n2. Nel and Sulas friendship is central in the novel. What role does this friendship<br \/>\nplay in Nel and Sulas lives and what point is Morrison making about the role<br \/>\nof life-long friendships in the formation of identity?<br \/>\n3. How do people who are intensely individualistic fare in the novel? Is it possible<br \/>\nto break away from the values of the community and to be ones own person?<br \/>\nAnswer the question with reference to at least two of the novels characters.<br \/>\n4. How and by whom is love expressed in the novel? In what ways is the love in<br \/>\nthe novel a ease the suffering of the characters? How is love not enough to<br \/>\nappease the characters in light of their suffering?<br \/>\n5. In what ways are the various characters in the novel alienated from the<br \/>\ncommunity? Compare and contrast the journey of self-discovery for two characters in the<br \/>\nbook. Contrast Nels relationship to her mother and Sulas interaction with her<br \/>\nmother. Trace the use of three symbols in the novel and explain their connection to a<br \/>\ntheme in the novel.<br \/>\n9. What does Shadracks character teach us about the after effects of war and the<br \/>\nways mentally ill people can be ostracized from a community?<br \/>\n10.Although no one has ever joined Shadrack on National Suicide Day, in the<br \/>\nchapter titled 1941, much of the town marches toward the tunnel where they<br \/>\nhave not been able to get work and in their rage, the try to kill, as best they<br \/>\ncould, the tunnel they were forbidden to build (160).
