(Wikipedia.com)<\/p>\n<p>The term world music,- refers to music that is markedly different in form,<br \/>\nfunction and practice than ones own music. Clearly this is a<br \/>\nsubjective term, and should be understood as such. To many parts of<br \/>\nthe world, the music of the United States may be viewed as world<br \/>\nmusic. Concerning western music, there exists\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/homeworkhandlers.com\/three\/\">three<\/a>\u00a0fundamental<br \/>\ngenres of music: folk, popular, and concert (also referred to as<br \/>\nclassical or art music by some)<br \/>\n.<br \/>\nFolk music -in this context, should not be confused with the more<br \/>\npopular folk music that thrived in the United States during the 1950s<br \/>\nand 1960s. To create a distinction between these two types of music,<br \/>\nwe refer to the more popular folk music of the 50s and 60s as urban<br \/>\nfolk music.<br \/>\nFolk music in this context then, as a fundamental genre of western<br \/>\nmusic, is music that derives from a specific geographic location; the<br \/>\nmusic of a specific group of people in a specific place in the world. It<br \/>\nis music that expresses the lives and times of these people, it<br \/>\ncelebrates their joys and mourns their tragedies. In a way, it can be<br \/>\nviewed as a sort of journal for that group of people. Folk music is the<br \/>\nmusic of the common person, usually deriving from the lower socioeconomic<br \/>\nlevels of a given society. Folk music is not the music of the<br \/>\nrich and powerful.<br \/>\nFolk music is simple and highly repetitive. It is created and not<br \/>\ncomposed, meaning it is not notated, written down music. It is taught<br \/>\nand passed on orally. It is created by amateurs for amateurs.<br \/>\nExcessively ornate or complex music is not a consideration in the<br \/>\ncreation of this music. Many times this type of music may serve<br \/>\nutilitarian needs for the given group of people, such as work songs,<br \/>\nwedding songs or funeral laments.<\/p>\n<p>Popular music-, as the name implies, is music that is created for the<br \/>\npurpose of being accepted and embraced by as many people as<br \/>\npossible. For this reason, popular music tends to focus on more<br \/>\nuniversal topics such as love, so that as many people as possible<br \/>\nmay relate to such music. In this case, this creates a distinction<br \/>\nbetween folk and popular music. However, like folk music, popular<br \/>\nmusic tends to also be more simple and repetitive. Popular music can<br \/>\nbe created or it can be composed. In popular music there exists a<br \/>\nwider array of talent, from extraordinarily gifted performers, singers,<br \/>\nor instrumentalists who possess a supreme command of their music<br \/>\nabilities, yet have never studied music formally, to those who are<br \/>\nequally gifted, yet have studied music formally, and can read and<br \/>\nnotate music.<br \/>\nOne aspect of popular music is what is known as the hook, meaning<br \/>\nthat there exists one portion of the song that is attractive, catchy and<br \/>\nmemorable, easy to remember, so that you are hooked after just<br \/>\none hearing of the song. The primary function of popular music is to<br \/>\nentertain, but popular music is not limited to only that purpose. Many<br \/>\npop artists, within the context of popular success, do create<br \/>\ncompelling artistic music. And, many pop artists have chosen to<br \/>\nexpress social\/political messages to draw attention to specific issues<br \/>\nin a given society.<\/p>\n<p>Concert music-, commonly referred to as classical music, is<br \/>\nprobably the most distinct genre of music. It is usually written by very<br \/>\nwell-trained composers for very well-trained musicians. As a result,<br \/>\nconcert music tends to be more complex in nature, and this is one<br \/>\nreason why concert music has never been as popular as the other<br \/>\ntwo genres. In order to enjoy concert music, one has to know and<br \/>\nunderstand the music better. There is a necessary investment on the<br \/>\nlisteners part to focus and pay attention to the music in order to fully<br \/>\nappreciate and enjoy it. And, while every person likes to be popular<br \/>\nand successful, and whereas there are many classical composers,<br \/>\nperformers and conductors who strive to be very popular, many times<br \/>\ncomposers and performers of concert music are not motivated by<br \/>\npopularity or financial gain, but rather by artistic, self expression, at<br \/>\nthe expense of popularity.<\/p>\n<p>Hybrid music- is music that may posses qualities of more than one<br \/>\nfundamental genre. Crossover music is music that may begin in one<br \/>\ngenre, but over time may take on qualities and characteristics of<br \/>\nanother genre. Please do not confuse this term with crossover hits<br \/>\nin the Billboard Top 100.<br \/>\nFinally, sacred\/religious\/spiritual music may be categorized in any<br \/>\nthree of the aforementioned genres of western music. And, whereas<br \/>\nsuch music is most definitely a genre of western music, please note<br \/>\nthat it is not a fundamental genre of music.<\/p>\n<p>a cappella is a music that terms that refers to a vocal group singing<br \/>\nwithout the aid and accompaniment of music instruments. In earlier<br \/>\ntimes the terms meaning was, the church style or in the style of the<br \/>\nchurch, referring to unaccompanied vocal music. In the Medieval<br \/>\nperiod, the only music allowed in the Catholic church (the first<br \/>\nChristian church) was unaccompanied vocal music. Thus, when<br \/>\npeople would hear such music being performed outside of the church<br \/>\n(not necessarily sacred music), they would declare, look!
