For example, a\u00a0<em>rules-based code<\/em>\u00a0title may sound very \u00a0direct, strict, and punitive. It may even sound a little condescending; \u00a0you need to follow these rules or else. If the title has the term\u00a0<em>compliance<\/em>, \u00a0it may imply that it\u2019s only in place so that laws are followed and \u00a0adhered to but not convey the importance of business ethics as well. \u00a0Having the word\u00a0<em>values<\/em>\u00a0in the title describes an approach of \u00a0connecting employee behaviors with the company\u2019s values. Integrity is \u00a0another possible word that can be used in a title to suggest good \u00a0business ethics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you find one title more attractive than another?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Personally, I like the\u00a0<em>code of conduct<\/em>\u00a0term in a title. This \u00a0sounds like a guide in which to follow and adhere to without sounding \u00a0negative. It also sounds general and all-encompassing rather than just \u00a0being one sided on rules or business ethics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Describe\u00a0the message that the title \u201ccode of conduct\u201d \u00a0conveys? Does it reflect the purpose of the document to provide employee \u00a0guidance on expected conduct?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes, I believe the title\u00a0<em>code of conduct<\/em>\u00a0properly reflects the purpose of the document. The word\u00a0<em>code<\/em>\u00a0means something in which to follow.\u00a0<em>Conduct<\/em>\u00a0means how you should act or behave. Therefore,\u00a0<em>code of conduct<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0is a set of rules or regulations in which one should act or behave. \u00a0This is both applicable towards ethical behavior in the workplace and \u00a0creating an ethical culture.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Propose creative titles for ethics codes for a pharmaceutical company and a restaurant. (Gonzalez-Padron, 2015).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some creative titles for a pharmaceutical company could be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dispensing Healthy Values<\/li>\n<li>A Prescription for Positive Conduct<\/li>\n<li>Just what the doctor ordered.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some creative titles for a restaurant could be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Acting in Good Taste<\/li>\n<li>Savory Expectations<\/li>\n<li>Avoid Getting Burned<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Identify two other company ethics documents and share the \u00a0titles of their ethics documents (consider your own organization or one \u00a0that you are familiar with for this question).\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At my current employer, they have an ethics document called\u00a0<em>Compliance \u2013 Code of Ethics<\/em>. \u00a0This document covers topics such as: compliance with laws, rules and \u00a0regulations, conflicts of interest, fair dealing, books and records \u00a0(accounting controls and disclosures), waivers, corporate opportunities, \u00a0and confidentiality. It also describes: protection and proper use of \u00a0company assets, gifts and entertainment, compliance resources, and \u00a0reporting procedures if employees witness any violations of the code. \u00a0Finally, it covers disciplinary action if there are any violations.<\/p>\n<p>I found an ethics document from a previous employer. Their document is called\u00a0<em>Business Conduct Guidelines<\/em>. \u00a0In this document they articulate their commitment to integrity and \u00a0compliance. Do you find one title more attractive than \u00a0another?<\/p>\n<p>When working for large and sometimes small organizations, you are \u00a0going to have to review and sign an ethics code eventually. Some people \u00a0believe ethics codes are to punish wrong doers when in fact the code of \u00a0ethics are put in place to protect employees and staff. The ethics code \u00a0documents provides tools to know exactly what behavior is expected on \u00a0your job. I find the code of business conduct more attractive because I \u00a0am familiar with that information. We have a business code of conduct \u00a0that is completed each year. The online course is a 2 hour class and the \u00a0document to sign electronically is at the end of the course. Many times \u00a0it is stressful because it describes everything that is accepted and \u00a0not accepted.
