For example, if they ask you a question, don\u2019t respond.\u00a0 If they smile at you, don\u2019t smile back.\u00a0 Act as though they\u2019re not really there at all.\u00a0 (<strong>Note<\/strong>: This will not be easy!\u00a0 Please choose carefully the person with whom you do this!)<\/p>\n<p>Observe the other\u2019s reactions, and take note of how it feels to you.<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0 Briefly describe what happened when you gave the other person \u201cthe silent treatment\u201d. How did it feel to you, and what were their reactions?\u00a0 (<strong>5 points<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0 Was this communication? Explain and support your answer.\u00a0 (<strong>5 points<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0 We discussed the following features that communication MIGHT involve:<\/p>\n<p>a. It might involve passing information from one person to another<\/p>\n<p>b. It might involve one mind affecting another<\/p>\n<p>c. It might involve conscious intent \u2013 that is, communication has\u00a0<em>only<\/em>\u00a0occurred if one communicator understood what the other communicator\u00a0<em><strong>intended<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0to communicate<\/p>\n<p>Support your answer to question 2 by discussing each of these, a., b. and c, as they relate to your experience of giving someone the \u201csilent treatment\u201d. (2020).\u00a0 Class notes, Rutgers University, 9\/xx\/2020<\/p>\n<p><u><strong>Grading<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p>Your assignment will be graded according to the points system outlined above (<strong>20 points total; your total will then be multiplied by 5 to constitute a grade out of 100 points<\/strong>) as follows:<\/p>\n<p>Part (1) (<strong>5 points<\/strong>) Gives a clear description of what you did, and how it felt to you, and what the other person\u2019s reactions were.<\/p>\n<p>Part (2) (<strong>5 points<\/strong>) Makes a clear claim about whether or not this was communication, and supports this claim with evidence\u00a0<strong>both<\/strong>\u00a0from your experience of giving the silent treatment to someone,\u00a0<strong>and<\/strong>\u00a0from class materials (especially the online Modules).<\/p>\n<p>Part (3) (<strong>10 points<\/strong>)\u00a0 This should be the major focus of effort.\u00a0 Be sure to engage seriously, thoughtfully and clearly with\u00a0<strong>each<\/strong>\u00a0part, a., b., and c.
