class=\"section_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"the_content_wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>\u00a0<u><strong>Major Writing Project 3:\u00a0 Joining a Conversation You\u2019ve Researched\u00a0<\/strong><\/u>(5\u20136 pages)<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Write a researched argument about an issue affecting your future career field, your major field, or your community, or focus on an issue described in the readings you\u2019ve done from the book.\u00a0 This paper is your own argument, but you should take into account what you\u2019ve learned during this course:\u00a0 begin by showing the conversation your paper is responding to (\u201cthey say,\u201d which should include clear positions on the topic), have a clear statement of your own argument about the issue (\u201cI say\u201d), include quotes and incorporate them smoothly (both in the \u201cthey say\u201d and \u201cI say\u201d paragraphs), point out possible objections to your argument, use appropriate transitions, and explain why the issue matters (so what? who cares?).\u00a0 You must use at least 5 sources and at least 2 must be from academic peer reviewed journals.\u00a0 You should also give your argument a clear title at the beginning of your essay.<\/p>\n<p><u>\u2013 No plagiarism<\/u>: Review the definitions of plagiarism, and remember that plagiarism also includes submitting a paper from another class for this class<\/p>\n<p><u>Recommended structure<\/u>: \u00a0For this paper you have 5-6 pages to work with and you need to include, in effect, five\u00a0major parts:<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Introduction: includes an overview of the conversation (names of key authors and the issues you\u2019re bringing up), a brief statement of your argument (or thesis statement), and a brief explanation of why your argument matters<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 summary of\u00a02 or 3\u00a0authors or arguments, with quotes as evidence<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 summary of how they agree\/disagree; provide quotes if necessary<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 your own opinion and your reasons for your opinion (which includes\u00a0at least one\u00a0naysayer); provide quotes as evidence<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Conclusion: includes a return sentence, a restatement of your argument, and a developed explanation of why your argument matters<\/p>\n<p>Note that these are five parts, not paragraphs (exceptions: the introduction and the conclusion are usually one paragraph each).\u00a0 What could this look like?\u00a0 Here\u2019s an example:\u00a0 After the brief introductory paragraph (where you introduce your topic, an overview of the conversation you\u2019re entering, a sense of your argument and briefly why your argument matters), you might have a summary of one author (1 paragraph), then a summary of the second author (1 paragraph), and a summary of another author or position (1 paragraph).\u00a0 Then you might have one paragraph that explains how they agree or disagree (though you can already allude to that in the summary paragraphs through phrases like \u201cUnlike X, Y asserts that\u2026\u201d). \u00a0Note that the paragraph that explains how the authors or arguments\u00a0agree or disagree is still \u201cthey say,\u201d since you\u2019re not yet putting forward your own opinion on the issues.\u00a0 At that point you\u2019ll have written about\u00a03 pages.\u00a0 Then you write your own argument (\u201cI say\u201d) in relation to the conversation you\u2019ve set up (about two pages). \u00a0At that point you\u2019ve written about 5 pages.\u00a0 Then you end with a concluding paragraph, where you wrap it up with a return sentence and again explain why it matters.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind that this way of structuring your argument is only a suggestion; it doesn\u2019t have to be exactly like that.\u00a0 But hopefully this gives you an idea of what this kind of paper could look like.<\/p>\n<p><u>Grading Guide<\/u>:\u00a0 I will grade your MWP3 according to the following grading guide.\u00a0 Use this guide when writing your paper.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Introduction (10 points)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Includes an overview of the conversation (names of key authors and the issues you\u2019re bringing up), clear \u201cI say\u201d statement (thesis) placed in relation to authors, and a brief explanation of why your argument matters<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThey say\u201d (20 points):\u00a0 Shows conversation paper is responding to<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Summary includes basic information about authors as well as the full title of essays; summaries do not agree or disagree with authors (summaries inhabit worldview); summaries use sophisticated signal verbs to summarize authors\u2019 points; no listing or \u201cclosest clich\u00e9\u201d (pp. 31, 35, 33)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Quoting (20 points): Uses quotes correctly and appropriately<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Quotes used to present \u201cproof of evidence\u201d (p. 42) in summary of authors\u2019 arguments \u2014 Quotes should not be \u201corphans\u201d (p. 43) \u2014 Quotes should be framed appropriately (\u201cquotation sandwich\u201d) (p. 46) \u2014 Quotes should be Introduced with appropriate verb (p. 47) \u2014 Quotes should present \u201cproof of evidence\u201d (p. 42) \u2014 Indicates page number of quote (p. 48)<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI Say\u201d (20 points):\u00a0 Clear statement of your own argument<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Clearly distinguishes \u201cthey say\u201d from \u201cI say\u201d \u2013 Clearly signals who is saying what: Uses at least one template from pp. 72-75 \u2014 \u201cI say\u201d includes clear reasons for argument that are not simply summaries of authors\u2019 arguments \u2013 Clearly plants naysayer to support \u201cI say\u201d argument (use at least one template from pp. 82, 83,84-85, 89).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conclusion (10 points)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Includes at least one \u201creturn sentence\u201d in the conclusion to remind reader of what \u201cthey say\u201d (p. 27); includes a restatement of thesis or \u201cI say\u201d; includes a developed explanation of why your argument matters (uses templates from pp. 95-96, 98-99).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bibliography or Works Cited\u00a0(10 points)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Includes proper bibliographic form \u2014 no annotations included here \u2014 includes 5 sources; 2 must be peer-reviewed<\/p>\n<p><strong>Editing and tone (10 points)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No editing errors (spelling, grammar, punctuation, and formatting); Uses proper tone (formal where appropriate, informal where appropriate)<\/p>\n<p>More
