{"id":13273,"date":"2020-11-24T09:05:42","date_gmt":"2020-11-24T09:05:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/onlineclassesguru.com\/index.php\/2020\/11\/24\/art-history-paper\/"},"modified":"2020-11-24T09:05:42","modified_gmt":"2020-11-24T09:05:42","slug":"art-history-paper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/onlineclassesguru.com\/index.php\/2020\/11\/24\/art-history-paper\/","title":{"rendered":"art history paper"},"content":{"rendered":"<style type=\"text\/css\"><\/style><p>Write a five-page paper (typed, double-spaced) in which you discuss these two paintings.\u00a0 Read the sections in Gardner on Impressionism and Post-Impressionism.\u00a0 No further research is necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Your paper should focus on the stylistic changes involved in the shift from \u201cImpressionism\u201d to \u201cPost-Impressionism\u201d as exemplified in these paintings.\u00a0 Van Gogh\u2013as Gardner explains\u2013was influenced by, but also reacted against, certain aspects of Impressionism (represented here by Pissarro).\u00a0 Explain this historical development more fully in reference to these paintings.<\/p>\n<p>The paper should be a careful visual analysis of the paintings, at the same time incorporating your specific observations into the larger scheme of the development from Impressionism to the Post-Impressionist style of Van Gogh.\u00a0 Discuss each painting in the context of what you have learned about that artist from the Gardner book and from class lecture.\u00a0 Points to consider include the following.\u00a0 How does each painting relate to the broader characteristics of the artist\u2019s work, and of Impressionism (for Pissarro) and Post-Impressionism (for Van Gogh) in general, as discussed in Gardner and in class lectures?\u00a0 You may compare the paintings at the museum to other paintings in the Gardner text by these artists.\u00a0 With regard to the paintings in the museum, consider the artist\u2019s style:\u00a0 including the quality of the brushstroke (its width, the thickness of paint, directionality and other characteristics), and the use of color. \u00a0Think about the quality of light in the scene.\u00a0 To what degree is the artist sensitive to the element of time, and does the landscape seem to record a particular time of day or season of the year\u2014or not?\u00a0 How does the artist distinguish different textures:\u00a0 grass, foliage, stone, wood, etc.?\u00a0 (Or is the texture of the painting more about the materiality of paint rather than that of the object depicted?)\u00a0 Think about what the artist is looking at and how he composes the scene. Note the viewpoint within the scene:\u00a0 does the artist seem to be looking at, down, or up at the scene and does this affect your reaction to the landscape in any way? \u00a0What are the general spatial qualities of the landscape:\u00a0 does it convey a sense of depth or is it relatively flat?\u00a0 Is there a human presence in the landscape and what effect does this have?\u00a0 What kind of landscape is depicted in the painting:\u00a0 wild or \u201ccultivated\u201d, i.e., including or bearing the imprint of a human presence?\u00a0 Finally, can you link up any of these observations of the paintings\u2019 visual qualities and subject-matter with the underlying ideas and motivations behind the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist movements, and the artistic ideas of these artists, as recounted in Gardner and in class lectures?<\/p>\n<p>You do not have to devote equal time to all of these questions with regard to each painting.\u00a0 The important thing is to relate your visual observations of each painting to what you know about the artist\u2019s style and ideas about art, and to organize these points into a coherent argument about the development of landscape painting from Impressionism to Post-Impressionism.\u00a0 The paper will be graded equally on the content AND the quality of writing.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/onlineclassesguru.com\/orders\/ordernow\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com\/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTyj99p60XCLyLk1htB7-1neRt8-2QdnenNlQ&usqp=CAU\"target=\"_http:\/\/onlineclassesguru.com\/orders\/ordernow\"\/><\/center><p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Write a five-page paper (typed, double-spaced) in which you discuss these two paintings.\u00a0 Read the sections in Gardner on Impressionism and Post-Impressionism.\u00a0 No further research is necessary.
