Since readers are moved by different elements, it is important we appeal to as many readers as possible:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ethos\u2014credibility of author, credibility of sources, morality, values<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Pathos\u2014emotions, sympathy, empathy, relevance, personal connection<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Logos\u2014logic, research, data, reasoning, irrefutable proof, sound explanations<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>First, read these articles about types of appeals and then follow the instructions below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/writingcommons.org\/ethos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><u>Ethos<\/u><\/a>\u00a0 This appeal to credibility is known as \u201cethos.\u201d Ethos is a method of persuasion in which the speaker or writer (the \u201crhetor\u201d) attempts to persuade the audience by demonstrating his own credibility or authority<\/p>\n<p>.<a href=\"https:\/\/writingcommons.org\/pathos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><u>Pathos<\/u><\/a>\u00a0 Pathos offers a way for the audience to relate to the subject through commonly held emotions. However, it is important to determine when pathos will be useful and when it will only serve to muddy the argumentative water<\/p>\n<p>.<a href=\"https:\/\/writingcommons.org\/logos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><u>Logos<\/u><\/a>\u00a0Logos is the appeal to logic. Logos isn\u2019t logic like the formal logic in math, philosophy, or even computer science; it is the consistency and clarity of an argument as well as the logic of evidence and reasons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Initial Post<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1<\/strong>:\u00a0In your chosen discipline, find an article, ideally one that is persuasive to make the task easier, but even a scholarly, informative article can still have evidence of the appeals.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Go to the \u00a0Library.<\/li>\n<li>Navigate to the Articles &amp; Databases tab of the large search box at the center of the library homepage.<\/li>\n<li>Search for topics in your field.<\/li>\n<li>Find an article related to your\u00a0<strong>Week 5 Position Paper<\/strong>, \u00a0<strong>\u201cthe benefits of traveling to education<\/strong>\u201csomething you might use as a source for the project.<\/li>\n<li>Read it for the 3 rhetorical appeals.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Step 2:<\/strong>\u00a0In your initial post this week in the forum,\u00a0<strong>provide the link<\/strong>\u00a0to the piece you evaluated.\u00a0 Then discuss the effectiveness of the piece based on your \u201cgrading\u201d of its use of appeals.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Identify the rhetorical appeals (logos, ethos, pathos) used in the piece and discuss their effectiveness.<\/li>\n<li>Does this article have ethos? How is the author an expert in the field?<\/li>\n<li>Does this article have logos? Is there a thesis statement in the article?<\/li>\n<li>Does the article have pathos? How does the writer appeal to the reader\u2019s emotions or connect to the reader?<\/li>\n<li>After analyzing this article, do you believe it would be a good source for your Position Paper?
