(<strong>https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/02\/02\/opinion\/02herbert.html?_r=0)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The passive voice<\/strong>\u00a0is applied to a verb in a sentence when the \u201cdoer\u201d or actual \u201cagent\u201d of the action is after the verb in a \u201cby\u201d phrase or completely missing rather than before the verb. Also, a passive verb always includes a form of \u201cbe\u201d and a past participle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cis practiced,\u201d \u201cwas frisked,\u201d \u201chas been stopped\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agents can be added to a passive verb in a \u201cby\u201d phrase.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Passive:<\/strong>\u00a0Racial profiling is\u00a0<u>practiced<\/u>\u00a0in New York (by the police).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Active:<\/strong>\u00a0Police practice racial profiling in New York.<\/p>\n<p>Writers often use the passive when they don\u2019t know or don\u2019t want to reveal the agent or \u201cdoer\u201d of their action. Herbert relies heavily on the passive in his essay because in most cases he often doesn\u2019t know who was responsible for the action he is calling into question.<\/p>\n<p>Herbert starts his essay with a sentence in the passive voice:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe New York City Police Department\u00a0<u>needs<\/u>\u00a0<u>to<\/u>\u00a0<u>be<\/u>\u00a0<u>restrained<\/u>\u201d [by whom?].<\/p>\n<p>1. What other passive verbs do you see in this essay? What effect does this linguistic pattern have on you as a reader?<\/p>\n<p>2. Notice that all the sentences after paragraph 12 are in the active voice. What effect does this shift from passive to active voice have on the message that Herbert is delivering?<\/p>\n<p>3. Herbert also repeats specific words that capture the readers\u2019 attention and keep the focus on these particular concepts.\u00a0Two examples are\u00a0<em>stop<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>frisk<\/em>, which are repeated throughout the essay. Find three other words or parts of words that Herbert repeats in this essay.
