R202 Introduction to World Religions Fall 2020
A quotation from the final sermon given by the Prophet Mohammad appears on p. 197 of World
Religions Today (the helpful footnote explains that tine source of this quotation is the biography
of the Prophet written by Ibn Ishaq). This text says clearly that “every Muslim is a brother unto
every other Muslim.” Explain this idea of the universal relatedness of Muslims. How does this
fit with the idea of the “straight path” as a formula for devotion to Allah in Islam? And how does
the idea of the relatedness of all to all fit with the idea of the ummah in Islam? Be specific
how the individual Muslim is expected to relate to and think of her community, in terms of
belief and practice.
